Your most valuable asset isn't your house. It's your paycheck.

A 40-year-old earning $75,000 will earn roughly $1.9 million by 65. Disability income insurance protects that number when illness or injury interrupts it.

Why it matters

Every other plan assumes the income keeps coming.

The mortgage, the 401(k) contributions, the college fund — all of it is funded by your ability to work. That ability is insurable.

  • Replaces a portion of income when you can't work due to illness or injury
  • Short-term and long-term structures, individually owned or through work
  • "Own-occupation" definitions that protect specialized careers
  • Benefits can continue to retirement age for serious disabilities

Coverage anatomy

The four dials of a disability policy

What we tune when designing income protection
DialThe question it answersTypical range
Benefit amount How much of my income is replaced? Commonly 50–70% of gross earnings
Elimination period How long do I wait before benefits begin? 30 to 180 days — longer waits lower the premium
Benefit period How long can benefits last? Two years, five years, or to age 65/67
Definition of disability Disabled from my job, or from any job? "Own-occupation" is the stronger standard

Common questions

Asked across our desk

Doesn't Social Security cover disability?

Social Security Disability Insurance exists, but its definition of disability is strict, approval can take many months, and the average benefit replaces only a fraction of a working income. It's a floor — not a plan.

I have coverage through my employer. Is that enough?

Group long-term disability often replaces 60% of base salary — but benefits are usually taxable, bonuses and commissions may not count, and coverage ends when the job does. An individual policy fills those gaps and stays with you.

What does coverage typically cost?

A common rule of thumb is 1–3% of the income you're protecting, depending on age, health, occupation, and how the four dials are set. We'll show you the trade-offs side by side so the premium fits the budget.
